(NewsInsights.org) – Following a disastrous debate performance, many Democrats have called for President Joe Biden to consider stepping down and letting someone else take his place on the ballot this November. One rumored name continuing to pop up is none other than California Governor Gavin Newsom (D). He recently emphatically shut those reports down.
On July 4, Newsom was speaking at an Independence Day picnic in Michigan, where he made it clear that he believes Biden has both the energy and the platform to win in November. He warned attendees of what could happen if former President Donald Trump were to win yet again and told them “not to be fatalistic, not to fall prey to all of this negativity.” He was also posed with the question of whether he would seek nomination if Biden drops out, and he refused to answer, saying only that “Joe Biden is our nominee, he’s our president. … And I look forward to voting for him.”
Newsom has been staunchly in the president’s corner, hitting the campaign trail in several states and rallying behind him following a Wednesday meeting of Democratic governors. So far, Newsom has visited Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New Hampshire, states he has widely avoided for years. He is doing so to boost Biden’s favorability, but it could also work in his favor, giving him a national platform, which some believe is a precursor to him replacing Biden on the ballot. It could also set the stage for a 2028 run.
Biden, in the meantime, is trying to rally the rest of his party behind himself, despite some serious misgivings and calls for him to step down. He was adamant on Monday, July 8, that he was not going anywhere. Trump and the Republicans are looking to capitalize on his poor debate performance and are increasing their efforts in battleground states, including Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Michigan, and Virginia.
