(NewsInsights.org) – As soon as Nikki Haley announced she was dropping her bid for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, former President Donald Trump became the presumptive nominee. Yet, even after Haley stepped down, Trump continued to face ongoing political irritation in the form of the ousted GOP representative from Wyoming, Liz Cheney.
The self-described Constitutional conservative made her stance regarding Trump very clear in May 2021 after her removal from the Republican House Leadership when she said, “I will do everything I can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the Oval Office.” Cheney made it clear she believed Trump set the events of January 6 in motion and came perilously close to unraveling the nation’s democracy by violating the peaceful transition of power.
On Wednesday, March 27, Cheney spoke before a large crowd at the Knapp Center at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. At capacity, the center holds around 6,400 people. The former representative nearly filled the venue.

While Des Moines leans Democratic in elections, Cheney’s ability to draw such a large crowd was significant. It also highlighted how Trump has faltered in drawing moderate Republican and Independent support for his campaign.
Cheney warned voters against reelecting Trump in the 2024 general election. She reminded the crowd that the former president had already “tried once not to leave office.” She pointed out that electing him to the same post would remove any incentive for him to transfer power peacefully to a duly elected successor.

She empathized with crowd members expressing strong objections to certain Biden administration policies and admitted that she also harbored policy disagreements. She reminded voters that Congress and the nation had grown through political discourse and survived bad policy, but she said, “We can’t survive a president who is willing to torch the Constitution.”
Iowa GOP Chair Jeff Kaufmann discounted Cheney’s credibility with conservative Republican voters. He pointed out that she obviously felt “more at home” speaking “on a liberal college campus” than directly with Republican voters. He criticized the former representative for causing party division, saying only “woke liberals” listen to her now.
