(NewsInsights.org) – The Memorial Day weekend allows citizens to honor the lives of the men and women who served our nation to preserve our freedom. For many people, it also marks the beginning of summer. The holiday this year will undoubtedly remain memorable for one Winnetka, Illinois, homeowner after he exchanged gunfire with would-be thieves.
The North Shore homeowner told reporters that three thieves stole keys to a Range Rover and a Ferrari after breaking into his home office in the early morning hours of May 27. He recalled hearing a noise around 5 a.m. and rushing outside to find the intruders had started both vehicles. One was at the end of his driveway, but the other was behind a security gate that the burglars couldn’t open.
The homeowner described seeing three people, but he couldn’t determine the race or gender of the individuals who wore masks, hoodies, athletic pants, and court shoes. He yelled at the three, warning them to stop or he would shoot. However, one of the intruders fired a gun at him.
The owner took cover behind a tree. He told police he fired his weapon at least seven times. Two of the burglars escaped the scene in a silver Audi four-door sedan before police arrived, according to the homeowner. The third burglar fled on foot.
Police successfully recovered both the homeowner’s vehicles. The incident occurred in the 400 block of Sheridan Road. Detectives closed Sheridan Road between Ash Street and Willow Road for several hours during their investigation.
Police received no reports of injuries stemming from the incident. Investigators reportedly recovered more than 30 shell casings from the scene. Crime scene investigators were still determining how many shots the participants fired.
Nine people, including a 5-year-old child, died in shootings over the Memorial Day weekend in the greater Chicago metro area, and 41 people reported injuries. That number is down from last year when police recorded 53 shootings, resulting in 11 deaths.
