Mexican Group Encourages Illegals To Vote for Biden

(NewsInsights.org) – The Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington, DC-based think tank and watchdog organization, recently raised alarms about Resource Center Matamoros (RCM), a non-government organization (NGO) associated with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), providing legal aid to asylum seekers hoping to enter the US. The Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project found flyers throughout the RCM facilities seemingly encouraging illegals to vote to reelect President Joe Biden.

The Oversight Project provided an image of one of the notices in a post on X, formerly Twitter. The handout, printed in Spanish, explained that the Resource Center consists of six office units and acts as a base for HIAS to provide legal and employment assistance in Matamoros while refugees await asylum hearings. The flyer describes RCM services, including document delivery to camps and pre-hearing consultations with asylum candidates.

The notice ends with a plea reminding people to vote for President Biden when they are in the US because the RCM needs “another four years of his term to stay open.” Arguably, the flyer looks like it targets asylum seekers who cannot legally vote in federal elections.

However, non-citizens, even those with permanent legal resident status, cannot vote in federal elections. Additionally, some states disqualify convicted felons and some individuals with mental disabilities from voting in federal elections. Finally, although they can participate in primaries, US citizens residing in US territories may not participate in general presidential elections.

Congress passed the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 to prohibit noncitizens from voting, imposing a fine, a one-year prison term, or both for violations. Violators also become subject to deportation and inadmissibility to the US.

Notably, Gaby Zavala, a US citizen from the Texas Rio Grande Valley, runs the RCM and pulls many of her volunteers from nearby Brownsville. While Zavala likely knows voting laws, questions remain as to who posted the flyers, who the intended audience was, and whether the notices could have led newly admitted asylum seekers astray.
