(NewsInsights.org) – Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) has had a storied political career. At his zenith, he won the 2012 GOP presidential nomination to run against then-incumbent President Barack Obama. In later years, Romney was very vocal in opposing the presidency of Donald Trump during and after his term, which isolated and alienated him from the Republican party. In a recent interview, the lawmaker told CBS host Norah O’Donnell he wouldn’t endorse either Vivek Ramaswamy or Trump for president.
In a “Person to Person” segment aired on October 26, Romney and O’Donnell discussed the senator’s history and reticence with the former president. The former Massachusetts governor said he’d happily “support virtually any one of the Republicans” before qualifying his statement, “maybe not Vivek.” He said he found the other GOP candidates acceptable. However, he also stated he would readily vote for Democratic candidates rather than Trump because he saw it as “an upgrade.”
Earlier in the interview, when O’Donnell asked whether Romney was considering or would consider running as an independent, he told her that option was off the table because “independent candidates are likely to elect Donald Trump.” He opined that another Trump administration “would be devastating for our country and its character.”
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Ramaswamy punched back against Romney’s statements, saying the senator wholly opposed the America-First movement, not just one man. The tech business mogul considers himself a strong proponent of America-First principles. He went on to launch a more personal attack, telling Romney he hadn’t voted for him, either, and that he was still calling on Romney’s niece, Ronna McDaniel, the RNC chair, to step down.
In an emailed statement to Fox News Digital, a Trump campaign spokesperson wrote that “a loser and quitter like Mittens” was unlikely to sway voter opinions. Steven Cheung, a Trump advisor, told Newsweek that Romney was “a certified loser” retiring now that his constituents have “learned he was serving himself.” Cheung added that he believed the senator suffered from an advanced illness of “Trump Derangement Syndrome” for which he should seek proper treatment.
