(NewsInsights.org) – Homeland Security petitioned the Supreme Court of the United States through its Emergency Docket to appeal a Fifth Circuit Court ruling generally barring Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents from cutting or moving razor wire. On Monday, January 22, the SCOTUS vacated that order in a five-to-four decision. Now, former President Donald Trump is encouraging states to send their national guards to support Texas in repelling illegal immigrants back to Mexico.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) argued that President Joe Biden has consistently failed to protect the border or turn back illegal immigrants. Encounters between CBP agents and immigrants have soared over the last year on the southern border to nearly 2.5 million, prompting Abbott to declare an “invasion.” Abbott said the situation triggered Article I, § 10, Clause 3 of the Constitution, allowing states to act to secure their borders under the imminent threat.
Earlier this month, Abbott ordered members of the Texas National Guard to take over the Shelby Park area of Eagle Pass, where they erected razor wire barriers and prohibited CBP agents from accessing the border or the river via the boat launch. Migrants crossing the river illegally have made Shelby Park one of the busiest crossing points.
On Thursday, January 25, former President Donald Trump weighed in on Abbott’s decision to invoke the “invasion clause.” In a double post on Truth Social, the current GOP front-runner for the nomination claimed Biden was “aiding and abetting a massive Invasion” of the US by fighting rather than supporting Abbott. In the second part of his post, Trump encouraged “all willing States to deploy their guards to Texas” to help the Texas National Guard remove migrants “back across the Border.”
Trump promised that if constituents reelect him, he would work with governors like Abbott. Moreover, Trump said he plans to “Seal the Border” and “Begin the Largest Domestic Deportation Operation in History.”
