(NewsInsights.org) – On Monday, July 15, the Republican National Convention began. That day, former President Donald Trump appeared in public following a recent assassination attempt. He named Ohio Senator JD Vance his vice presidential pick for this year’s election. A lot of information about Vance has come to light in the days since, including his stance on wars.
On May 28, Vance spoke at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and clued attendees into what a foreign policy might look like under a Trump/Vance presidency. One of the topics he addressed included the wars the US has been involved with over the past several decades. He condemned George W. Bush’s dragging the US into conflict in Iraq and basically said the former president “create[d] a regional proxy for Iran,” and engaged in a conflict that “slaughter[ed] over a million historical Christians.”
The Russo-Ukraine war is another topic Vance has repeatedly touched on. He’s made it clear that the United States cannot continue to fund the war-torn country because of “the very real constraints in munitions and manpower.” Instead, he believes Ukraine should take a defensive stance instead of an offensive one because it would “stop the bleeding.” He also believes the two sides should negotiate peace and that the Biden Administration’s refusal to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin is “absurd.”
However, one war he is committed to funding is the one Hamas is perpetrating on Israel. Like Ukraine, this is viewed as a “never-ending war,” but it’s different in Vance’s eyes because religion is involved. He also noted that “Israel has an achievable objective” and “Ukraine does not.” Vance has also blamed the tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths on Hamas, not Israel. He notes that it’s important for Americans to preserve the relationship with Israel, because it’s necessary to protect US interests in the Middle East.
