GOP Pushes to Ban Feds from Removing Border Wire

(NewsInsights.org) – The Supreme Court issued a 5 to 4 decision on Monday, January 22, vacating a temporary injunction placed by a lower court that prohibited federal authorities from removing or relocating razor wire installed by the state of Texas except for cases of medical emergency. In response, Representative Mike Collins (R-GA) announced on Wednesday, January 24, that he planned to introduce legislation to ban the federal government from removing state-constructed border barriers.

In a press release, Collins said he intended to support Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) by introducing the Restricting Administration Zealots from Obliging Raiders (RAZOR) Act in the House. The measure would prohibit federal agencies from removing or altering razor wire or other barriers states construct to control illegal immigration.

Collins cited statistics in his announcement that said the nation has experienced over 8 million illegal border crossings nationwide since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. In December, Homeland Security confirmed more than 1.7 million known “gotaways” at the Southern Border. Additionally, CBP agents encountered 312 individuals from the terrorist watchlist during that period.

In his January 24 statement, Abbott said the federal government under Biden has broken its agreement with states because it has “refused” to uphold immigration laws, subjecting border states specifically and the nation in general to unprecedented waves of illegal immigrants. He claimed Biden’s failure to secure the nation’s borders triggered the governor’s enactment of border security measures under Article I, § 10, Clause 3 of the Constitution.

The clause Abbott referred to allows states to act to secure their borders under the imminent threat of invasion. Abbott said he had already declared the invasion and would continue to direct the Texas National Guard, Department of Safety, and other state agencies to act to protect the state and the nation from the ongoing onslaught.

Collins accused Biden of “aiding and abetting illegal aliens,” allowing them to overwhelm the nation’s resources. The lawmaker said that the SCOTUS ruling affirmed “America Last Policies” practiced by the Biden Administration, and he called on Congress to stand with Abbott in his fight for state sovereignty and national security.
