(NewsInsights.org) – Vice President Kamala Harris quickly announced her intention to replace President Joe Biden during the upcoming November election shortly after he announced his decision to abandon ship. Following suit, members of the Congressional Black Caucus’s Political Action Committee (CBCPAC) officially endorsed Harris as the Democratic Party nominee in a statement issued within hours of Harris’ declaration.
Representatives Steven Horsford (D-NV) and Gregory Meeks (D- NY), who penned a letter announcing the CBCPAC’s decision on behalf of their colleagues, also lavished praise on Biden. However, many of those same congressional Democrats helped force the president’s ouster from the campaign.
CBCPAC’s message of approval came less than 24 hours after Biden announced his decision to step down at the end of the current term. In a letter issued early Sunday afternoon via his campaign account, the president said his decision to refuse the nomination was motivated by the belief that dropping out best served the interests of his party and the US.
Rumors quickly began to swirl on social media about who might step in to lead the Democrats in his stead. Some predicted the nomination would go to Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA), while others felt Biden’s vice president was the most obvious choice.
Biden appeared to put the controversy to rest in a separate message sent from his personal account later the same afternoon. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President,” he said. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be our party’s nominee this year.”
A flood of Democratic Party leaders quickly fell in line to back the vice president. For instance, Newsom was one of the first to endorse Harris after the president’s announcement. Secretary Pete Buttigieg quickly followed suit, as did Governors Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), Wes Moore (D-ML), and Andy Beshear (D-KY).
Messages then began rolling in from multiple progressive groups across the country as the party rallied behind Harris. By Monday, the vice president had not only accepted the nomination but also secured more than 2,000 of the 1,976 delegates needed to officially stand in as the party’s new nominee.
However, leading national polling averages show Harris trailing behind Trump. The numbers from several swing states show the former president decimating her.
