Dem Gov. Attacks Trump Over Age

(NewsInsights.org) – For months before President Joe Biden dropped out of the race, his age was a central focus. If he had been elected, he would’ve been 82 when he started his new term next January. Now, one state governor is using former President Donald Trump’s age against him while backing a new Democratic candidate.

Appearing on CNN on Monday, July 22, Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D) discussed the shift in the upcoming presidential election now that Biden dropped out of the race. Trump, he said, is “approaching 80” — he’s 78 — and “can barely get a sentence out.” Further, Polis stated that the former president “brings us back to the past,” while Vice President Kamala Harris, who Biden endorsed after dropping out, is “about the future of our country.”

Polis’ remarks about Trump’s age seem to be in line with a new strategy. Within hours of Biden’s announcement that he was going to focus on finishing out his term, Occupy Democrats, a top campaign group for the party, said the former president is “in a state of profound cognitive decline” and should step away from the race “immediately.”

Where questions about Biden’s mental acuity were taking center stage, the switch has now flipped to Trump, the oldest candidate on the ticket. Experts, such as Dr. Laura Smith, who works at the University of Oxford as a presidential history researcher, said while age is likely to continue to be a factor, Trump is masking concerns with his energy, and it’s more likely that race and gender will become more pivotal focuses moving forward.

Polis also spoke about the possibility of becoming Harris’ running mate, an opportunity he’s open to, while also squashing rumors that he plans to enter the race himself. Instead, he’s thrown his support behind Harris, like many top Democrats. It’s now up to the delegates to choose the nominee next month at the Democratic National Convention, after which there will be some very strong campaigning on both sides.
