(NewsInsights.org) – As primaries wind down, political journalists have begun anticipating convention season. The US House of Representatives Press Gallery recently issued a statement noting that the final deadline to obtain press credentials for the 2024 conventions is quickly approaching.
Journalists must submit their applications no later than April 12 for both the Republican National Committee (RNC) Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 15 through 18 and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on August 19 through 22. The House Press Gallery takes responsibility for providing credentials for online news and daily print media. Other galleries include the US Senate Periodical Press Gallery, House Radio-TV Correspondents’ Gallery, and Senate Press Photographers’ Gallery.
These institutions will grant credentials to qualifying media outlets rather than individuals. Each organization must submit a comprehensive application with the understanding that not all personnel will have simultaneous access to the events. The Congressional Press galleries are nonpartisan organizations that vet and provide credentials for both conventions. Security personnel at the conventions will not admit journalists without them.
The RNC has continued making arrangements for the July convention despite significant organizational changes in March, including the ouster of former Trump ally Ronna McDaniel as the RNC Chair. Michael Whatley took over her role, backed by presumptive nominee Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump as the co-chair.
Anne Hathaway, Chair of the 2024 RNC Convention Arrangements Committee, anticipates more than 50,000 convention attendees from all 50 states and 6 US territories will gather in Milwaukee for the four-day event to nominate the Republican candidates officially for president and vice president.
Even as the presumptive nominee, Trump transformed the RNC in a matter of days in March, making significant staffing changes not only at the leadership level but throughout the organization. Whatley told media sources he would focus on eliminating waste and recalibrating the committee’s data operation. He also hired attorneys to ensure election integrity, an issue that has remained close to Trump’s heart.
The RNC has prioritized fundraising efforts and the Milwaukee convention.
