Mainstream Media Downplays Trump Assassination Attempt

(NewsInsights.org) – On Saturday, July 13, former President Donald Trump was speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when things went horribly wrong. Mid-sentence, he grabbed his ear, then ducked as the Secret Service rushed onto the stage to cover him. In their attempts to cover the event, some media sites got it wrong.

Many people took to X, formerly Twitter, to express their distaste for the media. One user posted a rushed-together headline by CNN that read, “Secret Service rushes Trump off stage after he falls at the rally.” USA Today followed suit with a headline that suggested loud noises at the event scared the former president. A CNN spokesperson later told Fox News Digital that its headline was created “before we had 100% confirmation of details surrounding the assassination attempt.”

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) was among the lawmakers who spoke out. “Falls at a rally? Is this a real headline,” he asked on X before adding, “This is disgraceful.” Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined Hawley and noted the media “just can’t help themselves.”

The attempted assassination was the first since 1981 when John Hinckley Jr. shot former President Ronald Reagan as he was returning to his limo after a speaking engagement. It came two days before he was named the Republican Party’s official nominee.

Trump didn’t let the incident keep him down, however. He stood back up while the Secret Service was covering him and gave a fist pump to the audience to let them know he was okay. He later released a statement saying he was “fine” and getting medical attention. President Joe Biden addressed the nation shortly after, in a six-minute speech, saying, “There is no place in America for this kind of violence,” and he was trying to get Trump on the phone.

The Secret Service has been seriously scrutinized for the incident, and lawmakers are calling for an investigation into the federal agency.
